    Maybe in the northernmost parts of Hokkaido, but not really anywhere else.

    I'm pretty sure you can see them in Sapporo, in the southern part of Hokkaido.
    Maybe a bit more south too, but I'm not sure.

    I doubt that they'd be very vivid if even visible in Southern Hokkaido and past, I've never seen any here in Michigan [about the same distance from the Northen Pole as Hokkaido] or Abashiri.

    Because... it doesn't look like smoke at all?

    The red on the left is a sunset, and the 'smoke' isn't near it. On the right is a campsight or somethign else that suffered from the long exposure time.
