Cool story, but unfortunately this is largely in error.

It's true that the word game messed up Shokaku into Kakeduru (ironically, the spy knew Japanese [they actually were Japanese]... but even the Japanese mess things like this up, that's why they need furigana), but another Japanese-American in intelligence quickly sorted that out... quickly as in three days from receiving the transmission... in July 1939.
We were always aware that Shokaku was an Aircraft Carrier, we just assumed that she was some kind of advanced carrier warranting a new name system.
The Alaska-class wasn't even ordered until late 1940, and it took them another year to design it.

From all indication, Alaska-nee was designed and built merely to pummel the living daylights out of anything smaller than it (which was anything smaller than a battleship).
In fact, according to my sources (which could be wrong, I admit), she was born because some members of the design board felt dissatisfied that they weren't able to turn the Iowa into their dream 'cruiser/pocket-battleship killer'...

It's worthwhile to note that the artist interpreted a Heavy Cruiser (CB) as the in-game Fast Battleship...
However, considering that Alaska had the same throw weight as the Iowa (per minute, not per broadside), equivalent range and penetration to the 14in (including Kongo's), and was faster than Kongo to boot (~33+kn), but in possession of thin armor and absolutely no torpedo defense (although ironically better than Kongo in both... blame American HTS and STS)...
    ...she kinda fits.

Ah well, the information differences between this side and that side of the pacific will never fade, no matter the level of communication we have.
    Thus the curse of babel.

Just commenting because I thought some other people on Danbooru would find the information interesting.

About the Kadekuru, there's also story that say the name is mixed up with the fictional Chichibu class heavy cruiser. That would fit the type of enemy Alaska is built to kill.

So the author might have gotten these two stories mixed up.
First story is about how Shoukaku's name is mispronounced as Kadekuru in report.
Second story is about Alaska and the fictional cruiser Kadekuru.

    Alaska-class Large Cruisers

America's new class of cruisers which almost shared many similarities to a Battlecruiser, they were categorized as CB and named after territories and insular area occupied by the United States. The original concept of designing an 'overlarge' heavy cruisers was to counter the German's Deustschland-class "pocket battleship", the concept evolved after the deployment of the German Scharnhorst-class and the rumors the the Japanese are building new types of Battlecruisers. Their sole purpose is to counter the heavy cruisers that violated the London Naval Conference, they will be called as "cruiser-killers".

Alaska-class have standard displacement of 29,771 ton, 34,253 tons when full load. Their overall length is 246.43 meters, they are equipped with 4-shaft General Electric steam turbines, double-reduction gearing, and 8 Babcock & Wilcox boilers capable of producing 150,000 horsepower. Their speed could range from 31.4 to 33 knots with initial armaments of three triple 12 inch 50 cal Mk-8 naval guns, six twin 5 inch 38 cal dual-purpose secondary turrets, fourteen quadruple Bofors 40mm anti-aircraft guns, and twenty-four Oerlikon 20 mm cannon. The could carried a total of four OS2U Kingfisher or SC Seahawk aircraft which can be launched in their enclosed hangar located amidships.

6 were originally planned by the Americans, 2 were completed and were deployed during the last stages of war which are the USS Alaska CB-1 and USS Guam CB-2, 1 was discontinued which is the USS Hawaii CB-3, she was scrapped afterwards, and the other 3 were cancelled which are the USS Philippines CB-4, USS Puerto Rico CB-5 and USS Samoa CB-6.

USS Alaska CB-1 was launched on August 15, 1943 and commissioned on June 17, 1944. USS Guam CB-2 was launched on November 12, 1943 and was commissioned on September 17, 1944. During their service they escorted aircraft carriers from the Task Force 58, they provided supports for the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. They conducted naval sweep within East China Sea and Yellow Sea and sunk Japanese shipping vessels and supported several raids in Yangtze River. Alaska received three battle stars and Guam received two battles stars for their service. Both Alaska and Guam were decommissioned on February 17, 1947, and were scrapped afterwards.

    the next day...
    New Class
If that's what they wanted, we'll build new large sized cruiser to counter it!
When aircraft carrier Shoukaku was launched, the Americans got their hand on her information, but not the correct name reading. Instead they read the name as "Kakeduru". As the word relay game proceeded, this information got more mixed up and the final message in alphabet came out as "Japanese are building new battleship Kadekuru". There's rumour that the Alaska class heavy cruisers are built to counter this rumoured "new battleship".
First class cruisers : Mountain name Second class cruisers : River name Aircraft carriers : Mythical flying creature Battleship : Ancient Japan provinces New type battleship : none of those Those Japs! They're building a new type battleship! First class cruisers / Heavy cruisers (≧ 7'500 t) Second class cruisers / Light cruisers. Converted ships retain their old name. For example, Akagi and Kongou used to be battlecruisers and Kaga used to be battleship.
    What? Kadekuru?
