BTW, Kaga and Akagi are not the same class

Kido Butai was the Combined Fleet (Rengo Kantai) tactical designation for its carrier battle groups. On April 10, 1941, the IJN formed the 1st Air Fleet (Dai-ichi Koku Kantai) commanded by Vice Admiral Nagumo, it consist of all the seven carriers of the IJN with a total of 474 aircraft.
On November 26, 1941, the Kido Butai was formed, this includes Akagi and Kaga from the 1st CarDiv with Ushio and Sazanami from DesDiv 7, Souryuu and Hiryuu from the 2nd CarDiv, and Shoukaku and Zuikaku from the 5th CarDiv with destroyer Akigumo. The Kido Butai was escorted by battleships Hiei and Kirishima from the BatDiv 3, heavy cruisers Tone and Chikuma from CruDiv 8, light cruiser Abukuma from DesRon 1, destroyers Isokaze, Urakaze, Tanikaze and Hamakaze from DesDiv 17, destroyers Kagerou, Arare, Shiranui and Kasumi from DesDiv 18 with additional 8 tankers, 23 submarines and 4 midget submarines for the preparation on attacking Pearl Harbor.
The Kido Butai attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. They inflicted massive damages to the USN, they bombed and destroyed USS Arizona BB-39, damaged USS Oklahoma BB-37 which is beyond repairs, and sunk USS West Virginia BB-48 and USS California BB-44, the two battleships were re-floated and reconstructed afterward. They also damaged 4 battleships, 3 cruisers, 3 destroyers, and 3 auxiliary ships with 188 USN aircraft destroyed and 2,403 were killed during the attack. The Kido Butai lost 29 aircraft and 4 midget submarines were lost, 3 were sunk, 1 was grounded.
The Kido Butai, which composed of Akagi, Souryuu, Hiryuu, Shoukaku, and Zuikaku together with Ryuujou detached from the 4th CarDiv conducted raids in the Indian Ocean which sunk the British Carrier HMS Hermes, heavy cruisers HMS Cornwall and HMS Dorsetshire, destroyers HMS Tenedos and HMAS Vampire from the Royal Australian Navy, with additional 1 armed merchant ship, 1 corvette, 1 sloop and 23 merchant ships were sunk. Most of the ships that sunk were caused by aerial attacks.
During the Battle of Coral Sea, the 5th CarDiv escorted by 9 cruisers and 15 destroyers with 5 minesweepers, 2 minelayers, 2 submarine chasers, 3 gunboats, a oil tanker, a seaplane tender and 12 transports engaged the USN Task Force 17. TF-17 is composed of 2 carriers, USS Lexington CV-2 and USS Yorktown CV-5 escorted by 9 cruisers and 13 destroyers from TF 11, 17 and 44 with 2 oil tankers ships and a seaplane tender. During the battle, light carrier Shouhou, destroyer Kikuzuki and 3 smaller warships sunk in the engagement, Shoukaku, another destroyer plus 3 other ships were damaged while Zuikaku air complement depleted, they lost a total of 92 aircraft. The USN lost Lexington, and destroyer USS Sims DD-409, and an oil tanker, Yorktown suffered moderate damage from the engagement with 69 aircraft destroyed. The USN somehow manage to repulse Yamamoto's plan to expand Japan's controlled territories and incapacitate both Shoukaku and Zuikaku to participate in the Battle of Midway.
During the Battle of Midway, the 1st and 2nd CarDiv of the Kido Butai escorted by 2 battleships, 2 heavy cruisers, 1 light cruiser and 12 destroyers with 16 IJN submarines patrolling the area, were ambushed by the Task Force 16, which composed of 2 carriers, USS Enterprise CV-6 and USS Hornet CV-8 escorted by 5 heavy cruisers, 1 light cruisers and 11 destroyers with 19 submarines from TF-7 are patrolling the area. TF-17 joined TF-16 afterwards, TF-17 composed of Yorktown with 2 heavy cruisers and 6 destroyers. The IJN lost Souryuu, Kaga, Akagi and Hiryuu from the engagement and lost Mikuma with a total of 248 aircraft lost. The USN lost Yorktown and destroyer USS Hammann DD-412 after being torpedoed by submarine i-168, more than 150 from both carrier-base and land-base aircraft were lost during the battle. This battle considered one of the IJN's biggest lost during the entire war and the USN turning point.
On July 14, 1942, the 1st Air Fleet was disbanded, all carriers were transferred to the IJN's 3rd Fleet, which they will participate furthermore battles. On June 1, 1943 the 1st Air Fleet was reactivated as a land-base air fleet and participated further battles. On June 15, 1945, the air fleet was once again disbanded.
