I think they are asking whose "rice" the viewer wants to take. Himehajime: 1. First soft rice meal of the new year 2. First time having sex
You know, i kind of expected to be a rediculous war between the knatai collection fans, and the touhou fans, but the series, and the fanbases get along suprisingly well. This is all speculation seeing how there were more kantai collection cosplay, and doujins at comiket 85, then touhou this year.

Well i guess you're probably not the only one that think that way, however I think that a war between kantai and touhou is improbable, IMO both almost similiar, so it will probably go sideways..
Maybe this year would mark the boom of kantai, but touhou will still had its own pace in terms of fans i think. It maybe depends on how many artist would prefer too..
We could always enjoy them both since I'm sure that both of these series will continue to grow.
Let's wait till Touhou reaches Touhou 20 while there still more than a hundred of ships that haven't yet introduced in Kancolle (IJN only, but there are rumors that Kancolle would also include ships from other countries such as the USN, which I believe its more than a thousand ships).

I doubt that kantai collection would ever come to the states. There's still the whole issue of japan, and World War 2 with america. then there's the stigma of sexualized girls in japanese media that turns a lot of westerners off.

Well I doubted that Kancolle would even have an english translation, the game is only for Japan it seems. But the rumors of a USN ship would be introduce is quite strong.

I find it interesting that Kancolle fanart has had such a tremendous boom - and in retrospect, there are some very good reasons for it. Basically, it's because they are both fertile fanon soil.
In terms of fan-artist and doujin author appeal, Kancolle and Touhou share some crucial traits: a large number of characters with well-defined visual character designs but only the vaguest outlines of personality characterization and very little defined traits beyond their species (Touhou) or real-world ship type and history (Kancolle); and a paper-thin canon story. These traits give their respective fandoms a huge cast of characters that are well-defined enough to be distinctive but wildly malleable, and that can be put together with almost any story.
In short, Touhou and Kancolle both provide enough information about their characters to inspire fan authors' creativity, but not so much as to constrain it. About the only thing Touhou has that Kancolle lacks is individual leitmotifs for the characters (thus no remix community for Kancolle).

I'll disagree about the story though. Touhou has more in-depth and thought up stories, even though it may not look like it, and in it there are many character interactions and stuffs, which means there is character growth. Certainly not paper-thin and definitely better than KanColle, in a sense of how far they can go with the kind of stories to make.
I like the characters too, but as usual, some are more popular than the others and they're portrayed with distinct traits somewhat. Still, they have nice quirks and overall fanworks of them are pleasing.
As for the music, yes, they don't have ZUN for that after all.

Even then the logic still applies, people naturally wants to be able to divulge into their headcanons and make it matter without too much restraints. The fact that Touhou and KanColle are both franchises where fanon IS canon 90% of the time is the ultimate catalyst to their successes.
For example in animes if you ship any unlikely pairs, be it homo or just plain unlikely hetero, you are aware that you will never see your OTP in canon. But of course, despite knowing this, it never stopped anyone from creating headcanons for said scenarios anyway.
In thin-canon franchise like Touhou and KanColle, the fact that there is very little 'canon' restraints to hold you back while supplying you with 'materials' to work with in the form of the characters with appealing designs ready-made by someone else and vaguely established character traits, it is easier to enjoy the autonomy and liberty that your fantasized headcanon is as legit as everyone else's, perhaps even as much as the creators'. (Ask yourself, how much of Touhou's characters' traits are actually decided on by the fans in comparison to those given by ZUN.)
It gives the illusion that your opinion matters, that you can actually write a legit canon that holds more weight than that homo anime pair you fully knew will never come true.
While of course there will still be certain 'guidelines' for each characters' trait, made either by the fandom or the actual creator, it is still much more open for free interpretations than other medias with more solid canons.
It's like playing in games with many large options like Fallout or Mass Effect, where though ultimately your opinions and choices may not actually affect anything in the larger scheme, but it still gives the illusion that your opinion helps contributes to something.
This sort of exploitable ideal and illusion that your interpretations of the characters matter are even more appealing because it is in the Japanese community, where cultural suppression of free expression, increasing inferiority complexes that your opinion doesn't matter, the difficulty to land in an occupation where you can feel in charge, the ever decreasing chance of being able to get a 3D woman because they're turning more and more cocky by the day, the increasing trend of chunibyou, increasing amount of shallow harem animes, etc are rampant factors that amplifies the appeal of franchises where you can have your fantasies run free while still making those fantasies matter. Especially when in these cases where your fantasies are given the freedom to control attractive female characters.

I have to point out that the reason why touhou got popular is becsue of three very big things. Number one, the games are fun. Number two, Zun dosen't piss everyone off with copyright laws, and DRM, becsue he knows how busted, and archaic they are. He purposely left the project open ended, to let the creativity of the series flourish amongst the fans, and not leave it to the whims of big corporations to water it down, until it's no more than an empty, meaningless short-sided cash grab. Finally, the last factor, the project got lucky bacuse of the whole "moe" boom of the 2000's, thanks to the likes of lucky star, and haruhi, and full blown access to the internet to international audiences. Kantai collection will no doubt be huge, but it does not have the staying power of Touhou in the long run. Touhou has more creative forces behind it, and have many mroe stories to come. Plus, it's not owned by gaming comapnies, Kantai Collection is owned by Kodakawa games, and it will be marketed to death, until it gets left behind by the company in order to pursue a new caash cow. I'm not bashing the fans of Kantai Collection, but let's be real, which series do you think is going to be around 10 years from now?
Now, on the topic of real-life women, all i got to say is that they are human beings. They are human beings with desires, and wants, and urges, just like men do. to completely write them off, is to completely write off your self. in order to appeal to real life women you got to understand them as human beings. No matter what, Atago is not going to greet you when you come home(or when she comes home, if she's was a working human), Cirno is not going to give you a hug(although why would you want a hug with an ice fairy), and no 2d female character is not going to give you the companionship of a real female.

Very well said, D
======================================== also, I'm glad that Touhou doesn't have any "Official" anime series because ZUN knows very well what will happen if it does. I mean, look at Neptunia franchise, many fans hyped for the anime before airing, but after that? that anime series leads to their "downfall"
To think that Kancolle anime will airing in this year... Either Kadokawa is very optimistic or seeking for more profit, I don't know, but I hope Kancolle survives after the anime series ended

I'm not going to comment much on the Touhou games themselves because honestly I hardly saw any praises on any elements of the game themselves outside of the music despite Touhou having such a gargantuan fanbase that it has(bullet hell isn't actually hard to program so it's mechanics is nothing impressive and the graphics is nothing special either). But so far as I've met many people who are "Touhou fans" that I knew are "fans" of the "characters", not the "games". It's like someone who might likes Miku, listens to her music, draws a thousand fanarts of her but doesn't own the Vocaloid software and has no intention of ever buying one.
And I'm not writing off 3D women either, I'm saying something that is occurring for real in Japan currently. Japanese women are growing higher standards, everyone wants a boyfriend who is both handsome and rich and will not compromise for anything less, while at the same time more men are diving more and more into 2D women, which may or may not be because of some other causes as well but the attitudes of 3D women they meet in real life may be a contributing factor to many.
As I said in my 1st post, the attitudes of 3D woman is only one of the many possible factors that may drive men into wanting 2D characters who exists in a vacuum and can effectively be "manipulated" as much as one's contents within his own's "headcanon". That is also why I mention harem animes, which currently flourish despite having very, very, very cliched and repititive plots, because it's a man's escapist fantasy that ignores any resemblance to the 3D world.
It's a self-serving, wish fulfilment form of entertainment in a vacuum, harem and moe for the men, and yaoi for the women. All these genres, allows its audiences freedom in fulfilling his/her own fantasies to their hearts' contempt without the restraints. And Touhou and KanColle, as the thin-canon character-driven franchises, are able take this principle up to eleven and thrives under it far over all the other games in their respective genres.
I don't consider myself a fan of Touhou, KanColle, harem genre, homo genre, or even anime character shipping in general, I am not trying to subvert here that any franchise is inferior to another, but I am talking about this matter from a third person point of view.
