It's even worse if their house is also a shinto shrine (has to be kept ritually clean) dedicated to exterminating youkai.

Her physical presence is needed to keep the great hakurei barrier active, if she dies without raising a successor, then the barrier collapses and everyone inside it is killed.

Since this story already inspired a canon discussion, know that if a Hakurei maiden dies without raising a successor, there's certainly some kind of trouble, but then the youkai find another substitute. Aya said this on SSiB.

Even if the great barrier ruptures, I'm pretty sure the disaster is not "everyone inside is killed" kind of situation, but an "every youkai is now exposed to an entire world that don't believe on them anymore." Some old and strong youkai would even survive (Mamizou spent all her life on a remote island, for example), but a lot of them would simply wither and die.

I doubt that all the youkai (and possibly some humans) sages put all their existences in the hands of a single person (the Hakurei miko). I'm sure they have a "plan B" if something goes wrong, for example if the miko dies by an accident/disease or if she's a completely egoistic one that uses her power over the barrier to rule over Youkai and Humans like a nazi, or even if she isn't fertile and can't get a descendant. Also, they could get Yukari mantaining the barrier on her own (Akyuu said that she could create or destroy a place like Gensokyo whenever she desires).

The Hakurei Border is reinforced by some youkai but no names were given. If the Hakurei Border falls then the only border that's left is the reinforcement border. Thus being an extremely thin border to the outside world and can easily be passed through.
