The Escort (Jeep) Carriers were ordered to flee away from the Center Force while the destroyers and destroyer escorts provided smokescreens. USS Gambier Bay CVE-73 was damaged by Chikuma and then sank by possibly Yamato (which I believe the one who has a shaded face here).

About time this artist paid some respect to the US navy bravery in the war, even though he drew this to show Yukikaze's salute.

Can't really blame Freddy; he's generally not in the OC creation business and the general impression of Kancolle is that USN ships are Abyssals. In fact, mentions of the USN have been censored in a playful manner in the official 4koma, very few of the ships are willing to mention usn ships by name, etc.

So if you want to blame anyone for a whitewash, blame the source.

And USA win the war in the end by overwhelming force.
Try seeing movies and count how much is done by much superior heroes against enemy trying to do futile efforts versus how much is about a single hero "showing courage against overwhelming odds" (hard-to-get love interest and uncooperative in-laws included).
Like in post #1559848, the little destroyer is easier to sympathize with

Not saying who is right or wrong, just which one makes better movie

Well, we should focus on appreciating what Kancolle (and its fans) offers rather than what it doesn't.

The funny thing is, if I understand correctly, it's that very rationale which prompted Capcom to make 1942/1943. The Battle of Midway was seen as a point where the Americans were still the underdogs, and yet managed a decisive victory against the Combined Fleet.

It took the USA months of heavy fighting after Midway before it established naval superiority.

Yes, either the Big Stick herself or one of the other Iowa sisters.

Nope. Some of the Abyssals are indeed based upon USN ships and bases, but they're not the actual USN itself in-universe. There's also the fact that there are Abyssals are obvious counterparts to known shipgirls and some are downright wouldn't be part of the USN. Re-class is a BBV and the USN never utilized any actual aviation battleships. The closest were Cold War era stuff.

It was really funny seeing the Allies=Abyss supporters explode in denial when those 16 inch guns got released.
Most of them really thought that Japan was apparently 100% super ultra nationalists that would blow up Kadokawa headquarters for implementing
    a non Axis ship.
Guess they didn't realize that KanColle is mostly popular with people who only care about how cute a ship girl is, and not their nationality.
    Oh well, sucks for them.

I mean, there were hints of abyssal = sunken ships of either side all the way back during the Midway event (Midway Hime -> Akagi, AC Oni -> Kaga?) that were absolutely blown out of the water when Destroyer Hime was released.

And once again, please do remember that only IJN has Torpedo Cruiser class, and Abyssal has CLTs even before Midway event.

And now, an oddly apt poem:

The Charge of the Light Brigade

Half a league, half a league, Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
    Rode the six hundred.
    "Forward, the Light Brigade!
"Charge for the guns!" he said:
    Into the valley of Death
    Rode the six hundred.

    "Forward, the Light Brigade!"
    Was there a man dismay'd?
    Not tho' the soldier knew
    Someone had blunder'd:
    Theirs not to make reply,
    Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die:
    Into the valley of Death
    Rode the six hundred.

    Cannon to right of them,
    Cannon to left of them,
    Cannon in front of them
    Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
    Boldly they rode and well,
    Into the jaws of Death,
    Into the mouth of Hell
    Rode the six hundred.

    Flash'd all their sabres bare,
Flash'd as they turn'd in air,
    Torping the warships there,
    Charging a dreadnought, while
    All the world wonder'd:
    Plunged in the battery-smoke
    Right thro' the line they broke;
    Cossack and Mongol
    Reel'd from Torpedo stroke
    Shatter'd and sunder'd.
Then they rode back, but not
    Not the three Fletchers.

    Cruiser to right of them,
    Destroyer to left of them,
    Battleship behind them
    Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
    While ship and hero fell,
They that had fought so well
Came thro' the jaws of Death
Back from the mouth of Hell,
All that was left of them,
    Left of three Fletchers.

    When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
    All the world wondered.
    Honour the charge they made,
    Honour the Tin Can Brigade,
    Noble three Fletchers.

    (Children, defeat the enemy)
We're going to crush you within ten minutes
It is said that when their ships passed each other after the battle, an officer from Yukikaze gave his salute to the sinking Johnston. Battle off Samar
Even as many fall on the enemy's side, an escort carrier fleet stands no chance against the Center Force with four battleships.
But in this battle, three destroyers showed their gallantry. The loss of one escort carrier and three destroyers are repaid by the sinking of Choukai, Chikuma, Suzuya, and Nowaki.
