The 7th of Every Month Is...

    Rumia Day!

I've been worried about the nonstop rain we've been getting recently, but it looks like the rice harvest this year will go through without a hitch as well.

But, on topic, Rumia is adorable.

Well, in Poland it was just awful. It was raining way too much. And when it wasn't raining for one, two days - my family tried to harvest ASAP. After one/two full harvesters, it would go cloudy insanely fast. And it wouldn't be little rain, it would be instant storm. It was like that, dunno, 4 TIMES. That's about two weeks of bad weather... Funny thing is, when we were covering trailer with tarpaulin - wind was so strong it ripped out TREE from ground. Imagine sand and dust whirling around the trailer we tried to cover -,-

Huh, I am really glad everything is over now. I was insanely tired.

At another note, that's how rice harvester looks? Kinda small.

I don't know if rice can get wet... but your typical European grains cannot be harvested when those have too much moisture. It extreme cases, visible mildew starts growing. With constant raining, seeds would sprout in ears of grain - that's the worst thing possible... Even moderate moisture causes groth of microfungis which produces toxins. Of course, you can harvest grain, and then dry it. IF you have building/s installation capable of doing so; and even then, it costs. Essentially, moisture is bad. If grain has too much of it - you won't be able to sell grain for consumer use; it would be downgraded for animal-only use. It would be cheaper. That's bad; basically your whole year of work being decided if you managed to harvest it in good weather or not.

Well, how I should say it... in my region, we are kinda lucky we don't have any those accidents others might get. Flooding, earthquakes, tornados - these are exotic. I would be happy with just one week of good weather; and most of the time, it's not bad. It was bad this year.

Of the various cereal grains, rice is by far the most water-tolerant; it can survive flooding, and indeed it's quite common to deliberately flood the seedlings until they sprout. If anything, it's drought-tolerant rice strains that are uncommon.
