While they might have much more important thing to be worried when depth charge explodes nearby, imagine how the toilet would be like if they had survived

Not that there's any inherent bias in the difference between the showing of a dingy, broken Western toilet, and a sparkly new Japanese "hole in the floor where the toilet should be" toilet...

I'd say they have bigger issues than using Western or Japanese/Asian toilets if there is an issue about skin disease spreading from seat contact.

Bunch of men stuffed together in hot and cramped space without any bath for weeks.

Like the fact that submarine toilets run on compressed air and if you do any of like a dozen steps wrong when trying to flush it the contents can literally be launched back out of it like a jet propelled geyser...

US Submarines actually had fresh water showers that everyone got to use once every week or so depending on rank. Probably didn't help the stink much, but often enough to probably keep most grime based skin conditions at bay.

Is that how the toilet in ISS works too ? Straight out to the vast emptyness ?

And that it why you put the toilet lid down in addition to the seat...

Some did, but then it became clear that the little drops of frozen piss could actually damage a spacecraft particularly delicate bits like solar panels if it kept orbiting through it's own piss cloud long enough. The current ones mostly filter the urine to reuse the water, but solid waste (including one presumes the bits filtered out of the urine) is stored in what amounts to high tech plastic bags and periodically dumped with other trash in a capsule on a vector for re-entry or shipped back along with other things on the return leg of resupply missions.

Although a serious problem that took a serious engineering solution, I can't help but chuckle at the expression "kept orbiting through it's own piss cloud".

Anyway, yeah, remember kids, always piss into the gravity well, never orbit in your own piss cloud.

Some of the shooting stars you see in the night sky are astronaut poop. Can't unthink that now, lol.

That's exactly what happened to the U-1206 on April 14, 1945. The Type VIIC U-boat used a complex high-pressure valves system to allow flushing even when running at depth. So complex in fact, it couldn't be operated without supervision.

Misuse of the new toilet system resulted in a serious leak that forced the U-1206 to surface. Once surfaced, the U-1206 was bombed by British patrols, forcing Capt. Karl-Adolph Schlitt to scuttle the submarine.

One man died in the bombing, three drowned after escaping the vessel and 46 were captured by the British.

    No way! That's dirty!
    Improvement! Improvement!
Because of the inherent design, German U-boat can't use toilet during their dive.
Japanese also use the same system until early Showa era, but...
※ Since Meiji era, the navy are forced to use water flushed western toilet.
It uses pump, so the waste can't be discharge when external pressure rises...
For that reason, seems like they do it in buckets stuffed into the corner

    Circumstances of submarine toilet

The Japanese style toilet is also chosen to avoid skin disease in the unhygienic environment inside submarine.
Since it seems impossible for the Japanese who love cleanliness, the toilet design is improved so they can also be used underwater.
Besides, western toilet are out of the question dechi! It puts me into shivers thinking that my butt is indirectly kissing someone else's!!
