I always wonder when they show things like this: Are Japanese shores more heavily polluted than ours, or are they just more sensitive to the topic of pollution and littering? I see an awful lot more references to littering in the oceans in Japanese media than Western/American media...

Probably the latter. From what I understand, Japanese culture is very particular about neatness and cleanliness.

Nope, I've seen people depositing rubbish directly onto the beach. It's certainly clean when people are watching.
