To be completely honest. I read through the hard-translated ones a couple of times and I'm still lost as to what in the world is going on with the story. Hopefully the TN here on Danbooru can shed more light for me :X

As you have read through it, I'll sum it up then.
There was a surprise attack of the abyssal at Yokosuka while the main force is off to the Northern Ocean leaving Yokosuka with only destroyers defending it. With temporary operation base set at Sarushima, the girls desperately tried to fight numerous enemy and took heavy casualties that can be seen as Shigure, Michishio (regrettably), probably Shirayuki and several wounded later treated at Izu Sanatorium. The main force was too far away, the reinforcement from Yokosuka, Kongou couldn't get fitted in time. When all hopes seem to be lost, Murakumo who has an intimate relationship with out main admiral, came and pulled the girls' spirit together fighting off the abyssal sucessfully. But in action, Murakumo took heavy damage to the core so reparation is out of question so they decided to scuttle her. Most of the rest of the surviving girls resent their direct commanding officer but all the wounded understand. Still, he kept blaming himself for the losses especially Murakumo and spent his time after retirement to be with Murakumo who was able to move a little before got scuttled. But half an year later, for some reason, probably Murakumo got rebuilt in Sasebo, he was only demoted and reassigned there. Thus an I-guess happy endding.<
The story has many parts where it's flaskback or imagination, the hardtranslated has many lines wrongly translated doesn't help either. No wonder you didn't get it.
