I don't like Akebono, but I'm pretty excited for her diary.

I look at Akebono and couldn't help myself thinking she's singing The Hills are alive.

It feels like Akebono is writing this on Ushio's diary.

Akebono's Diary said:

I will protect not just Ushio, but also Shoukaku-nee, Mogami-nee, and everyone!

Akebono was blamed (unfairly) for the damage Shoukaku took in the Battle of Coral Sea. Akebono was supposed to be guarding Zuikaku, while Ushio guarded Shoukaku, but Ushio requested the swap. When Shoukaku took damage (and Zuikaku, the "lucky carrier" didn't,) Akebono was blamed by Admiral Takeo Takagi for the failure, and thrown into rear-line service.

Ushio was thereafter treated as a lucky ship, (and got an upgrade to her AA capacity) while Akebono was seen as a curse, and constantly left to get pounded by American airpower.

Later on, at Leyte, when the Admiral's haste to retreat at the Battle of Surigao Straight caused the flagship Nachi to ram Mogami, Akebono was left behind to guard Mogami. Mogami sank under sustained American air assault, (with Mogami's captain telling Akebono to escape because it was hopeless,) causing another failure for which Akebono was blamed. She then went back to protect Nachi, but American pursuit of Nachi was tireless, and overwhelming airpower sank Nachi while supposedly under Akebono's protection, as well. (You'd think they'd have reconsidered not giving Akebono any decent anti-air capabilities by this point.) Finally, Akebono, damaged in this last attack, was sent back to Manilla, where she wasn't given priority for repair, and was crippled in an (you guessed it) air raid on Manilla. She wasn't considered worth repairing by the shitty admirals, and was left to sink in the harbor.

TL;DR: Akebono needs a hug... and decent AA.
