That kind of thing also happens in Korean or Chinese. Usually it refers to someone you're in love, but I bet it's hard to be understood outside of Asia.

That statement came up a lot back in that black-and-white movie and "crooner music" era in America too...it's only now that I think about it that I realize we don't really say it any more.
