As long as he's not a kuso teitoku who separates them, we're good. But it was Akagi and Nagato who split them up in the anime, from what I can tell. The original lineup would've kept them together.
Actually against and airfield, ClT are "useless" since you cant use torpedos, a main gun double attack would do good damage tough. But hey, its Diomedea, it will probably end with Fubuki kai 6 launching dive bombers to Airfield Hime.
I know Kitakami-sama and Ooi are strong when it comes to torpedoes but is it really strong enough to kill tough abyssals in one shot?
Yes. As explained by the person above me, as long as the enemies aren't land installations ie. harbors, airfields... - CLTs, especially KTKM and Ooi, can virtually one shot anyone if you get a good RNG roll with cut-ins and double attacks at night.

Even if not a 1 shot (especially for tough event bosses), they will usually deal good damage. Unless RNG does not favour you that day.
Also, their preemptive torpedo shots basically mean they can take out weaker abyssals before the battle even starts. This makes for very smooth sailing. CLTs a must-have for every admiral.

Even a double attack wouldn't do much damage with a CLT though. Since installation types such as airfield bosses are immune against torpedoes, the torpedo stat which is normally calculated into the night battle damage formula (even into main gun double attacks), is not counted against installation types. The reason why Destroyers deal such huge damage in night battle even with just double attacks is because the torpedo stat is counted in them, but against bosses like MI Hime and Hoppo-chan you need a special damage boosting equipment like a Sanshiki (Type 3 Shell) to deal good damage. Only a limited type of ships can equip a Sanshiki though.

But hey, last event gave us WG42, or Nebelwerfer. That alone can help DDs and CLs to deal significant damage to installation-type. Not worth for sanshiki-capable ships, though.
I suspect we will have to face another installation-type with small fleet in the next event.
ages ago, my ktkm-ooi combo killed a lot of event bosses by opening torpedo only then dev decided to nerf them by adding firepower cap on day battle CLT was OP back then, and they are still pretty damn strong nowaday

True. I haven't got around to test it myself, not a fan of using CLT or DD in 3-5 northern route.

What exactly, historically, is the WG42 and why does it work against installation-types?

From the wiki on U-511, in brief, 6 Wurfkörper 42 30 cm rockets were installed on U-511's deck to see if it was feasible to use submarines as a rocket artillery platform - it was successfully fired, both on the surface and submerged (up to 12m).
It didn't go further as handling was compromised, and the accuracy was poor. I guess it works against installations as, well, they're rocket artillery. That's what they're good at.
The Nebelwerfer is the rocket artillery platform, and the Wurfkörper are the rockets - Yuu was never equipped with a Nebelwerfer per se.
Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure that the USS Barb at one point was custom equipped with rocket launchers to bombard Japanese coastal towns, since most of the Japan's merchant fleet and the IJN was sunk, crippled or forced to stay on port at that point.

As other comments mentioned, as long as it's not installation-type.
Even if they don't 1HKO, they deal substantial damage. They basically carry every player's fleet in events.
Well you see... Both I and Kitakami-san will be there.Huh? Y-Yeah.Admiral, are you free this evening?Oni? Hime? I'll sink them in one attack. How reliable you are.I said all that to Akagi but can I... actually do that....Admiral can just keep your posture. Doesn't that mean there's no factors leading to a loss?Shipgirls' Daily Life 35Author: Yuuji
