An instance where the Type 3 shells actually worked?

Of the 240 planes in that strike, 20 were shot down. Nagato's captain claimed that 2 of the Grumman Avengers were shot down by her Type 3 shells. Since everyone (British, American, Soviet, German, Japan) over-claimed their kills in the war, this shot could shot down 0-2 American planes.

But that shot still saved both Jun'you and Ryuuhou for sure. Still a good shot, worthy of being sad t have blown away a whole squadron.

not only she saved junnyou, but their relantionship are more than just a friend probably because both of them survive the war.

I can imagine getting hit by metal shards can give you a good scare despite what the american pilots may say. Facing heavy fire from a battleship... it would be wise to weight whether it is worth to try your luck...

Who knows next thing they may fire something that can actually damage your comrades or you may even get a bad dice roll and have the splinters shot you down.

Looked at an American account of that action...

Okay first off, I can not find any reference to Jun'you getting attack by torpedo bombers, one glide-bombing attack (which you can totally trust to hit your target[/sarcasm]) and one attack carried out by one solitary Avenger but nothing else.

Also, the final massed attack on Jun'you was conducted by SBD Dauntlesses from VB-10 of USS Enterprise (CV-6) but I can not find any sort of official After Action Report concerning the damage they suffered during that engagement. I doubt any official count was carried out due to the sheer number of operational losses the Americans suffered from that strike but if anyone can find anything that corroborates VB-10 getting hit by a 16-inch shell, it would be very much appreciated.

EDIT: Just found on Nagato's TROM that she claims to have shot down two TBF Avengers from Belleau Wood with that 16-inch shell. Unfortunately, only one Belleau Wood TBF attacked Jun'you leading me to believe that there are only two explanations: either most of those "Avengers" were actually Hellcats, or this was a friendly fire incident. Interestingly enough though, the records that I do have are strangely quiet on what happened to that pilot so if anyone has any idea of what happened to Ensign William D. Luton of VT-24, I would love to know.
