    To be fair, the HMS Dreadnaught paved the way for battleships being known as a veritable floating fortress capable of killing anything that so much as dares to cross its gun-laying range.

    That is, before the advent of naval aviation.

    I think he's referring to the US Navy's doctrine during World War 2 of cramming as many 40mm Bofors and 20mm Oerlikons as humanly possible.

    Well, that and the Americans' stereotypical obsession with the Second Amendment. In fact, USN ships in "that bloody boat game" have a tendency to be all about the guns, particularly the destroyers and ESPECIALLY the St. Louis-class.
