If this is historical inclusions of ships as shipgirls, there are 17 "modern" shipgirls present: The Kongos(4), Fusos(2), Ises(2), Tenryus(2), Kumas(5), and now the Nagatos(2). There are no modern destroyers yet, nor aircraft carriers, though Houshou and the first of the Nagara's will arrive soon.
Of course there could be older model shipgirls present. The Momi and Minekaze class destroyers are being built at this time. And old Mikasa is lonely.
As for what comes next...does even younger Kongou speak even more English?
The anime isn't canon. Their not probely not "normal human" though considering how they are "born". Biodroids maybe? I'm not a si-fi expert so I don't really know the name of a species that is born through a process that involves flamethrowers.

We never got to see a new born in the anime still to even know how they are created, the fire creation can be a theory until prove wrong. But I agree with the not "normal human" since they can be shot torpedos and high caliber type bullets and survive a lot of punishment without their bodies getting ripped apart.

The devs already said years ago in an interview that they are normal girls without their rigging. When you scrap or use one for modernization they just go back to living normal civilian lives since they no longer have the rigging.

in the end it's just their rigging that make em a KanMusu,, scrapping it mean you save one life,, but you can't join the war without your ship girls,, man i want them as normal human for some reason

This was pretty much my headcanon before they stated this. Granted they aren't normal in a sense but think of them like the Witches in SW. They're normal girls without their striker units, and they are the only ones that can defeat the Neuroi.
The Kanmusu are similar in that they are tasked with fighting an alien threat. Though the only difference is that they are purely IJN ships for now. Wheras in SW you got a multinational force.
Agreed. They fit to the concept of Tsukumogami, the Artifact Gods. The fairies can also be explained the same way, but as they are 'less' well known than the Ship Girls, they manifest only as 'fairies' instead of 'girls'.

The problem with that though is that you then have people apparently merrily sending out grade school age children to possibly die in combat...

Did you already forget about the Germans and Pastas or are you purposely ignoring them?
