Also, I'm starting to feel bad in Company of Heroes where Germans lug around MG42's because of this.

Don't know about WW2-era soldiers having earplugs, but you don't really wear actual earpros in combat.

I know now, soldiers have ear pro that has a microphone in it that blocks out all sound above a certain decibel range. You can pick one up yourself for about $10-$80
