    In the lead-up to the war, the Japanese built many top-heavy ship designs, since they were focused upon putting as many guns as possible onto the ships they could build. (They had less capacity to build ships, so they tried to put the biggest guns they could on them.) This lead to them having poor seaworthiness, being especially vulnerable to hull fractures or capsizing in high wind.

    My guess is that she was given Takao's track suit. Takao being several sizes larger than Akebono the track suit would likely catch wind like a sail.
