I don't get why artists keep drawing Chikuma as a bear.

Sure, the last parts to Chiku and Ma are remniscent to Kuma, but Chiku and Ma are two different kanji, where Kuma is a single kanji.

If you want to nitpick it that way then CL Kuma doesn't qualify either.

it's not about the kanjis but the pronunciation... remember, Japan loves their wordplays and puns...

It just gets urs and urs(a). But it can sometimes be picturesque - there's the occasional Kodiac moment.
