Just a bit of pedantry here, but the shells themselves aren't shattering (or even properly detonating), just getting their noses squished. All the chunks flying around appear to be from the windshield, which was a relatively thin hollow piece used for aerodynamics that shattered on impact or separated upon hitting water.
Not that you'd want to take one to the face, but still.

This is something that I kind of like to read. It's informative, relates and doesn't come off as obnoxious.
