To my knowledge, back in WW2 Depth Charges were triggered by either by timer, water pressure or in the case of the Hedgehog, contact fuses.

I have no idea how modern Depth Charges are triggered.

Depth charge are mostly timed depending the depth of the targeted sub. Rather then trying to land a direct hit, depth charge mainly cripple the sub from the explosive force and forcing it to resurface to avoid flooding. Modern day ASW use guided anti submarine torpedo or bomb if not wrong, depth charges are no longer used.

Yea they use torpedos for ASW role . depth charges just don't cut it anymore with the sheer depth a sub can dive to and the speed of of modern subs underwater
