    Mother of god...

Look at Hachi's war record and you'll see what I mean.

More like I'm interested in how I-8 and Reiji interact...

... and how the rest of the base as well as Inazuma will see him and that sub getting along.

... surely he can't expect the subs to gut a ship underwater, right?

Even with today's modern technology, fighting underwater with a knife is still more reliable than with a harpoon gun. Can't say the same for standoff ranges, though.

The side story has joined the main story quite nicely.

Eh... I can think of some more effective ways of killing shit underwater personally.

"More effective ways" with an 18 m range? There are nerf guns with more range and I've gotten within knifing distance of people using those without getting shot. Hell, the effective range of ye olde flintlock tends to be 50 m. There are also underwater vehicles capable of propelling one frogman about 8 knots so stabbing parties can easily develop in underwater fights.

To be fair, the ADS was specifically made with underwater gunfights at stand-off range in mind. Then again, no other armed forces have an equivalent weapon to compare it to, thus underwater combat will more or less devolve into a huge 1-on-1 grappling contest to see who can slit the other guy's throat quicker since it would be disadvantageous to fight ADS-armed frogmen at stand-off ranges.

By running perhaps, and if they were in fact foam dart guns also likely due to the fact the low projectile speed gives them inherently poor accuracy. You don't swim nearly as fast as you run. A world class record level 100 meter swim is 65 seconds round that down by a fifth for 20 meters and you get 13 seconds. So yeah good luck swimming at a dude with a knife for roughly a fourth of a minute while he has a fully automatic machine gun.

Of course encumbered by tanks, having certainly already covered considerable distance and thus not fresh and concerned with only one frantic sprint, and almost certainly not a world record caliber Olympic swimmer in reality the time would be even longer.

I kind of wonder if you've ever been in a pool, because it would seem it ought to be rather self evident that water is harder to move through then air. Motorized scooters and such must be gripped with both hands or even harnessed to the diver, have fun advancing through gun fire only to then have to stop, get off the vehicle, and THEN attempt to produce a knife from a scabbard before attempting to attack.

Granted but I generally got within knifing distance by not being seen and thus shot at. Still, you make some very good points here.
