Perhaps the trolling aspect is the fact that he is saying out loud the amount each one is earning. In a practical point of view, doing so is more likely to create jealousy or resentment feelings.

Well, in the Navy Officer School graduation, they used to call everyone in the order of their rank.
If there are 200 graduates, everyone and their family would know who ranks where.

Stopped doing that after WW2 though. Only the best graduate is called.

From where I'm from some school teachers have a depressing habit of calling out grades from lowest to highest when handing out marked test papers.

Might not be a thing in the West though.

(Plus, it's a bloody waste of time better spent on teaching or going over the test questions.)

Over here, something similar is done with grades and test scores. Jobs that paid based on performance would be the same, making it so that earning a lot drew either jealous looks or looks of pity from coworkers.

176800 Points * (100 JPY / 10 Points) = 1,768,000 JPY.

(Or, alternatively, 10 Points = 100 JPY is the same as 1 Point = 10 JPY, so just multiply 176800 by 10.)

I multiplied the whole thing by 10, which explains my math error. Still, 1.8 million yen is a load of cash for a destroyer just for New Year's.
