When "getting the wrong end of the stick" is literal.

Yes Graf, it is dangerous. Japanese audiologists must cry themselves to sleep every night.

As good as it feels, you really shouldn't clean out the ear wax like that. It falls out naturally and you kinda need it in your ear for antibacterial protection.

Yep, i could relate to that.. I'd either shiver like a willow in a storm, or coughing when i'm cleaning my ear with cotton buds..

My ears have become so accustomed to being itched by a cotton swab daily that they drive me insane when I don't, so I've had to start using antibacterial oil on the swabs so that I don't get an outer ear infection every other week. At least I get to keep my eargasms.

You can make too much and it can clog it up though. The men in my family all seem to and we can start to get a slight ringing, doctors that look in the ear at check ups have commented on the build up too. The way I've found to deal with it though is just tilting head and letting hot shower water run in for a bit and then flushing the loosen bits out with more water in a bulb.

Poking it with anything beside a proper scrapper (operated by someone that knows what they're doing) is likely to just A. pack it in and make it worse B. damage the ear drum if you really start digging around.

Apparently, it also depends on how "runny" your earwax can get, too. If memory serves me correctly, Japanese have a genetic predisposition to having dry earwax, which is a problem because they're really hard to clean out and require a specialist to do it for them.

Luckily, not being Japanese and living in the tropics, most of my family has the runny earwax and we can self-service ourselves just fine with simple cotton buds. I can't imagine how annoying it would be to have dried earwax clogging up your ears and not being able to clean them out yourself.

Japanese and grew up in Guam (the tropics), humidity and temperature doesn't really matter as my earwax was always dry and flaky.

Mother would occasionally clean out our ears, I rather enjoyed it.

Yup, it's based on genetics and not actual climate. Kinda like the mutants who have lactose tolerance.

Y... you put this into your ear...!?
    Then do it yourself.

    Yep.
    I... isn't this dangerous!?
This is scary! Scary scary scary scary scary scary sca-

    Are you okay, Graf?
It's an ear-cleaner! A tool that you insert into your ear to clean it.
