    The Sorrowful Houshou-san.

Aferwards, progress was made towards dietary improvement for the Unryuu-class by Houshou-san. Also, in regards to this squad's food situation, while they would usually eat in the mess, on holidays and rest days, the mess came to also be on break. And thus, the situation is...

    • By the way, soy-cooked locusts are available in supermarkets, depending on the area. While I've never had them, things that have been preserved in soy don't really have any flavour, if the texture's okay, I could go for it.

Edit: Looks like Unryuu and Amagi are fine giving their food to Katsuragi and subsisting on grasshoppers instead...

I can't actually get the "joke" of this page. I understand what the joke is, don't get me wrong. But in Thailand, I literally grew up on fried Locust treats my grandmother would make me.

So the "Oh so poor" joke is lost on me here.

I see it more as a "eating more = eating well" type of logic. It's even in the 1st panel.

It tooks me a few seconds to reconogize Katsuragi with her new hairstyle.

I never eat them, but still I consider this image heart-warming more than another thing. In Southamerica, in the Amazonia they eat some insects because they are part of the diet.

But I suppose the perception from a japanese (and more countries) is poverty or a bad diet.

Artist should take more the simple cuisine of the Unryuu class, more than the historical way.

Well, it's normal for us here in Thailand. Hell, I still snack out on them whenever I can.

Thing is, they're eating it instead of proper food and giving all the nutritious stuff away to Katsuragi. While you can subsist on nothing but locust, you'd need a whole lot of them (as in whole kilos of them) to meet the daily nutritional intake required for a growing body.

Unless you've been training in asceticism, then it's fine since you're barely using any energy (thus the low-energy diet is actually beneficial). No meal for a warfighter, though.

Does it have to do with that they are eatting Garden variety Grasshoppers not Locuts?

No, it's pretty much that it's considered a 'back-up' food - i.e. ' the crops have all been eaten by locusts, let's just eat the locusts'; however, you'll pretty much always find them prepared in such a way that all they taste of is the sugar-and-soy preserving agents they are boiled in. As an aside, the grasshopper (イナゴ) they're talking about is Oxya Japonica (Rice grasshopper), the same one found throughout Asia.

Hence, they're saying 'We've got the food grasshopper/locusts' and Houshou is all 'That's just grasshoppers - not real food!' or something to that effect.

Never been to Thailand so no idea about the food custom there, but if someone offer you a full course meal of rice, soup, and other dishes, generally you won't choose to eat locust right?

Don't get me wrong, I know some places have "EXQUISITE* food selection (bats roaches maggots worms and I'm serious....) and those actually are more expensive than meat.

No I got that part, that's like a 2nd punchline more than anything. The underlying joke is that they are eating bugs at all. So it didn't necessarily have to be Locust or Grasshoppers or even Chocolate covered ants.

I get the original joke that they are choosing alternative "Lesser foods" over staples such as Rice and beef. I'm just saying since Locust is specifically mentioned here (as well as having eatened other insencts) the joke itself just doesn't resonant with me at all despite me getting it anyway.

There are some jokes that are funny because "It's so true!!!" like Black guys making ghetto jokes. People who were actually raised in the ghetto can laugh cause they can relate while your "Rich folk" laugh cause "oh they are so poor!".

This one for me just seems to be so close to true for me personally that I can't see it funny at all but more "normal".

Imagine if you grew up eating sandwhiches in your home town, then move to another country only to find out that for that country to view sandwhiches as "pleb food" and have their own populace consider it a joke and "bad food beneath them". The joke would probably be lost to you cause you'd think it was a normal thing.

Locust is associate shortage of food due to its nature so often it come down as the last resort. Many Asian country eventually make them common food but still it is more or less something that the poor eat more than the middle class.

actually it just evolved into a snack in south/south east asian countries like Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam
but really they were what you would call "emergency ration" in war times just to survive and then it just evolved into a delicacy that the generation Y forgot

Not just snack. People eat them in meals too. And some even went extinct because they are caught for food too much. I assure of it since I am a Vietnamese and have a good experience of how good they taste. Heck, they are even of better class compared to fish or meat when it comes to protein source.

People back then didn't know they're healthier than eating beef and fish.

What Algester said is true: Locust is typically seen as an emergency ration when there's nothing left to eat. Unryuu and Amagi, being active carriers during the waning years of the war, had grown accustomed to being impoverished that they think that's all they need. Katsuragi, being the kid sister of the three and having basically zero war experience, means the two big sisters get to pamper her all they want as compensation for the hardship they went through, not wanting their cute little sister to have to go through their kind of hardship.

Is it okay if you guys don't eat?
I have improved the Akizukis' food situation, but...
    Hehe, seems like they're alright.
Those are just grasshoppers, aren't they...!!
    Because we still have locusts.
    Yep.
    We're fine.
    good girl.
There might be other girls elsewhere who eat their meals in modesty.
    Heyya!
    Yes, like the Unryuus.
Eat a lot, there's still more.
    I poked my head in.
