They only put the half-off tags on food that will go bad the same day (or the day after). That's the whole point of the clearance sale; Grocery stores tend to run on slim margins, so half-off sales basically guarantee they're losing money, but it's better to lose only half the money on nearly-expired food than lose all the money you paid for food you have to throw out.
