I don't think they are poisonous, as much as you don't have the means to break down the polymer. Probably similar to how later on in life milk gives most people runs since you loose lactase and the untouched lactose draws water into your crap. This is just me guessing though.

Raw potatoes are fine. The green ones are what you should watch out for, though the level of solanine and chaconine in most raw potatoes is neglegible at best. Just... Don't eat the green parts. Also don't expose potatoes to direct sunlight and it should be fine.
Oh, and avoid the leaves, flowers and fruits of the potatoes at all cost. You need to remember that they're from the same family as the Nightshade.
(The part we eat is called the tuber, by the way. Think of it as an underground food storage for the potato.)
