Funny that out of all the good things Germany can do, this is something.

Yannow, personally I think Germany is the better international team, but why do they lose to Italy in every single competitive match (not counting the upcoming July 2 Euro 2016 match as of moment of writing)? Is there something about their respective tactics that makes Italy into Germany's personal kryptonite?

Italy is good at their defense, I'd say probably the best team by this EM.
And they have good player in their team. Then you only need a coach that forms a team and a good tactics (be defensive but attack the opponent early on).

Not sure how true this is, but seems like it's because of their styles of play. Germany's style is to capitalise on mistakes their opponents make rather than overwhelm their opponents with pure power, while Italy is known for their watertight defence that doesn't allow mistakes, stemming from the catenaccio era. This is made especially true if they have a manager as good as Conte is.

Also for the record, they've met in group stages before, and all 4 group stage encounters ended in draws. So it's not like Germany loses all the time.

Italy has developed from the Catennacio era. Yes, they are still very good at their defense, but in my eyes they attack much earlier and don't wait until the opponent is in their half of the field. They are aggressive and have like I said a very good team.
And because Italy can attack so early, we can't be in our game like against Slovakia, since our goal is to tie down the opponent around their penalty area.

Still, it is why they traditionally have such a good defence.

The original catenaccio also had attacking elements that were largely overlooked by those who copied it. I suppose depending on the manager and the players available, the team's attacking strength can vary quite a lot, and it's pretty high right now.

    Seriously, Boateng, seriously?
That's the most stupid yopu could do in this situation :(.
This matter won't be settled in 90 minutes, although Italy was nowhere after the 1:0 :/.

What a game. And I'm so happy right now.

Nine shoots, and Hector with the final goal in this extremely long penalty shoot-out which was just nerve-racking.l

Never seen Germany spill this much spaghetti in a penalty shootout before. Luckily for them Italy spilled even more.

    Yes.
I had nearly a break down when Schweinsteiger didn't seize the chance to end(?) this.
But I don't want to blame any of those players on the field, be it Italy or Germany. The game was just tiring for both since the game was just intense and every little mistake would be the end.

Next one against France/Iceland is going to be without Mats Hummels...that is a big weakening. I hope we can compensate this...

I don't even know a thing about soccer (INB4 Europeans "Football") but I kind of like that Germany won and wiped the smug off Anchovy.

    Oh, well.

Still, not a bad showing for a team labelled as the worst Italian team of the last 30 years. We lost to a better team (no excuse, but it didn't help that the midfield was decimated before and throughout the tournament), but it was not another Maracanazo for Germany. The players can come back home with their heads high.

Though, I have to admit, I cannot fathom the degree of phisical exhaustion and psychological pressure they had on them, but those penalties...
