On another note: after nines years after development, TF2 currently only has 495 posts. Overwatch, after being out for...what, a month or so? Already has about 2400 posts.

I've seen Overwatch described as "TF2 with waifus". More females, more dudes drawing art of it.

Pretty much. Japan may have liked TF2 a bit more if it had more D.va. Though to be fair it's not like there was ever a shortage of art for TF2 either, the game just catered to a different market and a lot of it didn't get uploaded here.
