Not entirely sure if these two are Mogami and Haguro, do they have any historical connection that would explain this?
Not that I know of. Mogami and Haguro's sister ship Nachi have history--Mogami was crippled by a collision with Nachi during the Battle of the Surigao Strait, leaving her a sitting target for the gunfire and aerial bombing that would ultimately sink her--but my references don't mention her in any connection with Haguro. Certainly Mogami couldn't have had anything to do with Haguro's sinking, as the latter was the last Japanese cruiser sunk while operating at sea, months after Mogami had gone down and in a different ocean.
(I'm also completely at a loss as to the "hanging" imagery here. Haguro was torpedoed in battle by British destroyers, not scuttled, scrapped, or anything else that would suggest an execution.)
The last Japanese cruisers to be sunk in the war were Aoba, Tone, and Ooyodo.
Hmm. I suppose the case could be made, but it seems like hairsplitting to me. They were all stationary in port at the time, and as such, "sank" all of about six feet; all three were later scrapped. Haguro was sunk at sea, in the Strait of Malacca. The wreck wasn't even found until 2003.
Just for you, though, I'll amend the previous. Gods forbid anyone should omit piddling details on the Internet. :)
