why does she want a torpedo? neither the US nor Japan ever put torpedo launchers on their battleships.

or maybe thats why she wants one?

The Harpoon is a missile, not a torpedo.

Late to the party but I do recall that some battleships originally had torpedoes (but it's often the case that they removed them later on). Kongou being one of them .

HMS Rodney in fact is credited with the only recorded successful battleship to battleship torpedo attack when she hit the KMS Bismarck starboard amidships with one of the 12 622mm torpedoes launched while chasing her down.

Torpedoes were a standard feature on capital ships for a quite long time actually. They first appeared around mid-1870s and only started to disappear during late 1920s and early 1930s.

    "Long time" being rather relative...

The purpose of torpedoes on battleships wasn't to actively engage other battleships from close range since the general engagement range of battleships was well outside the range where unguided torpedoes were effective (although some people still thought Jutland would happen again...), but to sink crippled ships that were still afloat. For example, say, Bismarck. A large ship could be completely disabled and ablaze but still afloat, and unless you detonated a powder magazine, it was pretty hard/wasteful of ammo to actually tear a ship apart with gunfire alone, so torpedoes were an effective way of scuttling ships.

... But nobody besides the Germans would have really needed it, since why would a battleship be operating without destroyer escorts that could torpedo things more easily than a battleship could, anyway? In that vein, just keep in mind how many IJN ships' histories end with "was disabled by American forces, but scuttled by torpedoes from IJN DestroyerName after rescuing the crew", including the likes of most of the Japanese carriers.

noted to change the tag from "tomahawk_missile" to "harpoon_missile",
since baby iowa explicitly refered to the missile on her bib as Harpoon

same with 2 other post of the same series
