Too bad, Nintendo doesn't want to celebrate anything, that is metroid.

I don't need Nintendo to celebrate my favorite franchise. The Metroid 2 fan-remake just released and it's amazing! http://metroid2remake.blogspot.de/

Nintendo doesn't care that much for Metroid that even a fan project with a countdown release didn't get a cease and desist notice from the legal team.

Nintendo only does that when people try to make money off it.

You mean things like that non-profit Super Mario 64 HD remake made in Unity from past year?

Don't worry Samus, we still love you.

That might have been a copyright troll.

ETA: Oh wait, I guess you meant this. [autoplay warning]

Seems like the creator never intended it to get as popular as it did nor was it ever meant to be a full blown out game. But that copyright troll/rouge AI has been at it for years, even targeting obscure things like MUGEN[?] and not so obscure things like Undertale.

Nope. Project M was a popular fan project that got canned because of Nintendo legal reasons, and it was free.

I never understood why companies do that. Its like losing free advertisement and you piss off the fanbase where some pirate the existing games to just give them the middle finger back. Fan work is what makes a franchise if Touhou, Kancolle, Star Trek, or Star Wars are any indication.

Are you talking about this Project M?

Because there's no mention of a C&D being the reason it was taken down. They might've stopped because they feared legal action, but none actually took place. Also it's an illegal modification of an online game. It's not a fangame.

You mean a game that nintendo is still selling yet someone is violating copyright by trying to give away a modified version of it for free?

You guys have misunderstood the difference between original fangames and mods of existing games.

That's only one example of the many other fan projects Nintendo has shut down. We are talking about a company who profited ripping off King Kong / Peter Pan and now even YouTube let's play videos bother them. If that Metroid remake gains any more popularity, it will be shut down as well. In fact the Nintendo NES Classic Mini is a perfect excuse to shut down ROM sites later.

Hah! Told ya. You better grab the torrent while it's still alive.

Metroid 2 fan remake finally released, quickly hit with copyright claims.

    Combo x2

Nintendo takes down Nintendo Power collection from Internet Archive after noticing it.

Who is making money from this I wonder?

Copyright Law is a giant and bizarre mess of fear and hate for the most part, and I won't claim to understand it in any way, but I do know that part of the way it works is that companies HAVE to attack people for using their IP even if it's non-profit because otherwise they lose the right to attack people ever, even people who ARE using their IP and making money off of it.

Like remember that time the Elder Scrolls guys tried to sue Mojang for their new game, Scrolls? I'm willing to bet that even the Elder Scrolls guys were thinking 'yeah this is a dumbass lawsuit', but they had to do it anyway by law, otherwise they wouldn't be allowed to sue people who were ACTUALLY legitimately trying to leech off of the Elder Scrolls name.

I don't begrudge Blizzard for taking down the Nostalrius fan run legacy server. I do however begrudge them for being giant assholes about it. And I don't begrudge Nintendo for taking down AM2R. I just begrudge them for making Metroid Other M: The Rape of Samus Aran, literally the most offensive and sexist and terrible AAA game I've seen in my life.
