Actually, that's a good point.
Most recent event, I was in E-3 and my Kaga and Shoukaku got blown up preboss to red by those BB Himes, and it was the first time I was using the FCF where you can send damaged ships home.
Shoukaku had a damecon, and Kaga didn't, so I thought I'd let the FCF take Kaga back and I'd be fine at the boss. So when the FCF choice came, I clicked "yes" and moved on to the boss node.
What I didn't notice until I was in the boss battle was that the FCF had actually sent SHOUKAKU home instead since she was higher up on the fleet formation (thus she took precedence, game doesn't care if you have damecons or not) and thus I was at the boss battle with a red Kaga that could be sunk.
Immediately a cold dread washed over me, something that I had never felt for ages (I never had been in this kind of situation before, I make sure to never advance at red unless I have damecons). I actually started hyperventilating, I was so scared. My Kaga was at 99. That boss battle was the most terrifying 3 minutes of my life. To top it all off she actually did get shot at but only took like a few HP of damage when she was at about 20ish HP.
I actually had ringed Shoukaku (thus the damecon) and I had a policy of ringing only one ship of each ship type, so that's why Kaga was at 99. But after reading this story, I wonder if this isn't a good time to make up for my terrible command and ring Kaga as an apology.
Good God, TTK! That was a horrible ordeal, I'll say! I'm glad your Kaga made it out by the skin of her teeth.
If you don't have the resources to ring her, you can always make-do by giving her a reinforced expansion and a damecon in that slot. That should, at the very least, make it up to her for the time being.
Definitely know that feel. When my Akatsuki almost sunk, I feel that too. "I don't need Kou Medal anymore! I don't need Teruzuki! Just let her come back safely!" is what I thinking all the time, and almost lose all the hope when the closing torpedo aimed at her. and to my surprise, she just received scratch damage, returned safely, and victorious. Definitely the best feeling ever.
Now after a year ever since that day, thanks to that moment I advanced quite far in this game without any ship sunk, cleared all the event ever since, and I feel like I owe everything to her. And definitely never regret I choose to give her my one and only ring.
