What is with this recent trend where the third member of the legendary end group is so vastly different than the first two?

Zyguarde is basically a biological cluster of nanomachines while Xerneas and Yveltal are more uniform in design.

Lunaala and Solgaleo have this cosmic feel to them, what with them reflecting space on their faces. Then BLAM! we have this thing that's pretty much vectors incarnate.

Given the game's alchemic references, it's entirely possible Necrozma is an incomplete scorpion-like creature, and the vectors are actually part of its exoskeleton. A couple of guys drew what its complete form might look like.

Zygarde wasn't that different since he fit into the 'Tree of Yggdrasil' theme that the trio was based on. He was Green Nidhogg to Red Vethrfolnir (Yveltal) and Blue Duneyrr (Xerneas).

Necrozma is a little out there but I suspect there is some weird plot thing they're saving for it, like with Kyurem and Zygarde forms.

What if its design is a literal metaphor for three-dimensional space? Notice the theme it invokes what with it being the third legendary in the trio, the alternate-universe theme, and its relationship with the sun and the moon legendaries. We might not be getting the eclipse legendary we were expecting, but instead a deity that covers the negative space between the sun and the moon (quite literally, mind you).

I still feel like this is the third generation in a row where the third member suffers from Magikarp Power. No idea why they grew a boner over this idea. It made sense with Kyurem given its lore, but now it's getting ridiculous.

    Did it? *Checks*

Okay, I see what you mean. However, while Giratina did begin the alternate form trend with third-member legendaries, its base form is still just as powerful as Dialga and Palkia, at least base stat wise. When people bring up Kyurem, Zygarde, and Necrozma, they're referring to how woefully underpowered and incomplete they feel compared to their respective duo legendaries.

Once again, Giratina is still on equal footing with Dialga and Palkia, which is why we gloss over him.

Well right now we have the Dusk and Dawn Necrozmas
And the "Mega" evolution of Necrozma, usable when equipping Ultranecrozium Z on either Dusk or Dawn Necrozma
Ultra Necrozma. Its base stats are above Arceus. Hell it one-shotted 3 of my level 60+ Pokemon when I fought it in the game. I had to rely on my level 84 Incineroar(traded it from my Moon game to Ultra Sun) to execute a lucky Darkness Lariat on it.

When your Z-Move is powered by photons stolen from alternate universes, hell, if you yourself is a being of pure freaking energy, like maybe a newly created sun, and executing it drains the trainer's life force and it produces what in pokemon world equivalents to thermonuclear meltdown, forget Arceus or any god.
