To be fair, even as an American, I'm familiar with the term "in mufti", though I'd definitely have used "civvies" here.

I find it's more popular out across the Pacific to refer to "civvies" as mufti, versus North America or parts of Europe.

It's not that common in Canada either. More in the UK, but it's not unheard of.
