Fubuki DD-35 is her namesake's designation. The DD-35 indicates her position in the Japanese navy's early 20th century eight eight fleet plan, where the output of produced destroyers was expected to be so great that they would be assigned numbers rather than names. The compromise (name and numbers) was probably due to confusion to the system rather than its unpopularity from the crewmen.
The Fubuki-class and Ayanami-class all have this kind of name and incremental number system, starting at Fubuki's 35 and ending with Ushio's 54; the four Akatsuki-class destroyers do not have numbers.
