    There's a historical anecdote about Maru-yu where one of the prototypes of the Maru-yu class were being tested near where Kiso was docked. The Maru-yu failed to actually submerge and floundered, and Kiso's crew made fun of how bizarre the whole thing looked and asked whether or not she was really a submarine, or whether the Army could do anything right, etc.

    In KanColle, this is interpretted as Kiso being some sort of strict senpai to Maru-yu, with Maru-yu looking up to Kiso. Being Army, and made for basically solo runs into enemy-held territory, Maru-yu has almost no relationships with other ships, so this was the only characterization they could hang a relationship off of, other than "being a submarine" and throwing her with the other submarines.
