This is pretty much word for word from the Japanese Wikipedia, as the bottom suggests. Japanese sources state that Shimakaze was never hit by torpedoes or bombs. I don't know what US sources say.
So if you push her too hard, she'll explode. Good to know.
Faster...Must go... Faster...Rear Admiral Hayakawa ordered the torpedoes discarded to prevent them from exploding during the anti-air battle. Although Shimakaze fought in a narrow bay, due to her speed and skillful navigation, she did not receive any direct hits from torpedoes or bombs. However, a large number of near misses and machine gun strafing opened up small holes in her hull resulting in internal flooding and loss of navigation.
Asashimo tried to approach the stricken destroyer, but was repelled by repeated strafing attacks so that her rescue team could not reach Shimakaze in time, and had to abandon her.At around 17:30 at dusk, an overheated boiler exploded, and she sank by the stern.
