As covered in Japanese Destroyer Captain, the stiff American resistance at the Battle of Kolombangara and the previous Battle of Kula Gulf convinced the IJN to resupply via Vella Gulf instead, leading to Shigure's own misery.

1 DD sunk, 1 DD and 3 CLs maimed for 1 CL lost is considered a victory for the Japanese?

No sense of scale by the judges I guess, because by industrial ratio that's a clear defeat. Even if they'd sunk all 5 of those allied ships that would still be a draw at best.

No, it was a tactical victory because of that plus they landed 1200 men on Kolombagara, the mission objective, that night as planned. They did recognize their losses and chose to start taking an alternate route.

    I'm in the lead position...

    Yes!?
    Jintsuu-san, run!
Whoever uses the searchlight will be the prime target...
    I shall take the lead...
A torpedo hits her in the engine room, disabling her
Just then, a second torpedo hit Jintsuu squarely in the midsection. A large explosion tore her in two.
    Please, go.
Don't worry about us, focus on the enemies!
Whaa! Jintsuu-san, enemies spotted, dead ahead!!!
The two fleets collided with each other in the night. Flagship Jintsuu took the lead, illuminating targets with her searchlights despite the great risk.
    Please fire the torpedoes.
In order to support the destroyers, she drew the enemy fire to herself, becoming the target of concentrated gunfire.
After launching your torpedoes, please reverse course and reload them.
Even though the bow was ablaze, it is said her cannons did not stop firing until the end.
At this time, the Japanese destroyers had finished reloading, and turned back to overwhelm their enemies, who were slow in identifying the threat. The Japanese destroyers were picked up on radar, but having lost track of the three detached destroyers, RADM Ainsworth wasted several minutes attempting to identify whether the detected ships were friend or foe.
Jintsuu sunk after the following amounts of 6-inch rounds were expended: 1110 rounds from USS Honolulu 160 rounds from HMNZS Leander 1360 rounds from USS St. Louis
Result of the night action off Kolombangara Island Allies: 1 destroyer sunk 2 destroyers heavily damaged 3 light cruisers heavily damaged Japanese: 1 light cruiser sunk This was to be the last great victory on the Japanese side.
In total, 482 people, including the task force commander, his chief of staff, and the captain (among other key personnel), fought bravely aboard Jintsuu and were lost.
My next shot is ready to fire. Jintsuu's night battle line
    You've let your guard down.
But I know the enemies will fail, since those kids are good girls...

The Second Torpedo Squadron, led by flagship Jintsuu, sortied as the surface escort for the reinforcement and resupply operation to Kolombangara Island. One of the infamous "Tokyo Express" runs.

The Allies interpreted the Japanese course reversal as a withdrawal and detached three destroyers in pursuit. The Allies lost track of these detached destroyers.
