Just read about this engagement in a more formal book and I have only one thing to say about Asashio and Ooshio.

    Bad. Ass!

    Another gun battle begins.
    Chi-! They got away
Hey, hey, the fight's just begun
    Count me in as well!
    Take this! Boom!
    Ooshio!
Then, let's head out of the harbour.
    Sasago, withdraw now!
Let the Battle of Badung Strait begin
Sasago Maru-san, have you finished recovering all the Daihatsus?
    Yes!!
    Sasago, run!
The enemy ships are spotted, a mere 6 kilometres away.
Dammit, who the hell are these guys?
    Java
    Bali
At 1630, an enemy submarine's attack is evaded. Ooshio counterattacks but the enemy escapes.

    You won't run away!

    Torpedo

    Battleship!?
    No, it's a cruiser!

    Attack!

    Borneo
    Celebes
    Whatever, I don't care!!
    Makassar
    Let's chase after the cruisers!
    On the port side,
    Around 30 minutes later
Who still dares to pick a fight with us, knowing that!?
One of the torpedoes finds its mark
After pursuing them to the north
If it's a fight you want, I'm ready to accept anytime...
    The destroyer is done for,
    Don't run away!
    Searchlight, illuminate!
    Star shells-
    With one shot,
    A successful hit!
    All right!
The searchlight! What happened!? Did it break down!?
The Dutch Destroyer Piet Hein appears
    Run
    Dammit, move
    I'm her partner,

    Asashio

    Enemy ships spotted!!

    2 destroyers Ooshio Asashio
    February 19, 1942 (Showa 17)
Understood. Please take care of it.
In order to gain a foothold for the conquest of Java, a force was sent to land on neighbouring Bali.
Although Sagami Maru suffered heavy damage during the process, she successfully lands her troops ashore. At 1600 she begins her withdrawal.
Participating Ships Transports Sagami Maru Sasago Maru Eighth Destroyer Division First platoon Ooshio Asashio Second platoon Arashio Michisio Platoon will be used as the term for 小隊, which represents a 2-destroyer unit, for which there is no official counterpart in the USN
The second platoon will escort Sagami Maru and return to base first.
    Leave it to me!
In order to recover the Daihatsus, the first platoon along with Sasago Maru will proceed to Bali at once.
The stage is set for the naval battle that would go down in history as "Rats catching cats" to begin.
Against 3 light cruisers and 7 destroyers, in total the opponent fields 10 ships for A knock-down, drag-out fight
The first group of ABDA ships engaged were the following: Dutch Light Cruiser De Ruyter Dutch Light Cruiser Java Dutch Destroyer Piet Hein American Destroyer Pope American Destroyer John D. Ford ABDA = American British Dutch Australian
Don't even try to fight with your 8 cm gun!! 8 cm is approximately 3 inches, useful for anti-aircraft purposes only
Suddenly, the closest enemy, Java, begins to fire in the direction of Asashio.
    Night battle is our specialty!

    Come

I hope you're prepared for a scrap with guns and torpedoes, 'cause you're going to get more than you bargained for...
The searchlight was broken by a shell fragment. Several searchlight operators lost their lives.
A rangefinder aboard Asashio described the situation as if one leg had been eviscerated
From a mere 2 kilometres away on a parallel course, the battle between Asashio, Java and De Ruyter begins.
The gun battle had lasted but for only a moment. In around two minutes the exchange was over. Java had suffered some damage, but it was minor.
Of the Second Torpedo Squadron, Eighth Destroyer Division, and Flagship of the First Platoon,

    Ooshio

As Asashio had just been putting out to sea when the battle started, she was unable to make sufficient speed to chase after the two ships
The Dutch ships mistook the two destroyers as light cruisers.
At the same time, Ooshio had closed to 1500m to do battle, but the light cruisers had run away. (The Dutch believed that they had sunk 2 ships already)
A new one! Enemy ship spotted from the south, 6 klicks away!
1500m in front of Ooshio, a new challenger joins the gun battle!!
Outnumbered, Piet Hein reverses course and makes a smoke screen.
Asashio closes the distance to 1 kilometre
    There you are!
Ooshio and Asashio head southwards in line ahead formation.
The American destroyers, John D. Ford and Pope, are spotted.
    A parallel engagement begins
    Two more ships!
A smokescreen!? Is running away all they can do!?
Have you no courage to exchange blows with me!?
This was in fact, the heavily damaged Piet Hein.
To be continued in the middle part...
Don't fuck with me, if you've got something to say, say it to my face!
From one enemy to another... it doesn't matter how many there are, we of the Splendid Second Torpedo Squadron won't falter!
Piet Hein is sunk. The first round of the Battle of Badung Strait is over.
