Hydrophones on anything larger then a light cruiser at most were essential completely worthless in the WWII period, the surface noise and the lack of any sort of notable sound reduction aboard ship itself meant that unless the ship was literally sitting still they were drowned out to the point of uselessness. Even destroyers had to crawl along to get usable ranges, hydrophone use in that period was less some galloping fox hunt then it was a guy crawling along the ground with his ear pressed to the dirt trying to listen for moles.
