It's a Sino-Korean/Japanese word. It's a spin-off from 機根, and originally meant "human nature" but morphed into patience, perseverance, persistence, endurance, tenacity".

Well, kanji has diverged in its evolution from hanzi, becoming a species of its own. Here's the dictionary on the kanji in question, and while you can get that meaning from the individual kanjis, in combination, they mean something like "guts", "willpower", or "spirit".

I generally figure that "Guts" is just "Balls" made gender neutral/politically correct for Japanese TV.
