I wouldn't call it "common" just yet, but it's certainly gaining a lot of momentum. I do hope you are right on the latter part, though.

That's because most of it sucks too much to pass muster on Danbooru. Search the AyaCiru tag on Pixiv and you'll be shocked at just how much there is.

Searching for 文チル "AyaChiru" on Pixiv nets 443 results at present time with the first result being from May 2015, so it's not incredibly recent. As Vid-szhite states, the new game will most likely increase the numbers, but I doubt it will even be a doubling, but who knows.
