Why would someone lie about how much they spent by such a small amount as Tirpitz does, here, though? If you're embarrassed about how much you spent, you don't have to say any specific number. If you're going to, anyway, why volunteer a lie that's only 10% less than the number so ridiculous you feel compelled to lie about it? That's like saying you got a 64% on your test when you actually got a 60%. It's not significant enough that people would really change how they react, except if they then found out you lied...

I would think 100 bucks(ish) is a reasonably large amount of money, though. If it was 90 to 100, that's basically nothing, but 900 to 1000?

OK, if someone said to you they spent $900 in a week on a phone game, wouldn't you stare at them like their brain clearly grew tentacles and clawed its way out of their skull? Would dropping it down from $1000 really make you think they were any less insane? She's still in the "completely outrageous sums of money" range, so why would she think a tiny nudge in that direction is going to make a difference?

If she's going to lie to save face, say she spent 5000 yen instead of 100,000 yen, since that's a whole league of difference that would materially change how people react to you.
