They weren't always. Both species once had much greater ranges than they do now (particularly lions), and they overlapped considerably. Perhaps I should've used the past tense, as now they don't encounter each other much if at all, but the point remains.
(Also, maniacs like Clyde Beatty used to arrange lion v. tiger bouts all the damn time in the 20th century.)
