【DE5500型作業拡張車】
1970年製

第二次大戦時に既に生まれていた液式重心制御装置による二足歩行技術を更に熟成させ、作業用のアームを取り付けた上操作を民間で扱えるレベルにまで自動化した物を作業拡張車という。

本車はDEシリーズの5代目にあたり、最後のディーゼル機関を搭載した型である。
DEシリーズは日本の高度経済成長期を他の重機とともに支えた存在でもある。
DEシリーズ以後はガソリンエンジンを採用した新たな規格の車両が主となった。
しかしこの系譜も第三次大戦を境に途絶え、以後はAMPスーツと呼ばれる次世代型の作業拡張車が開発されていった。

制御系統の詰まった前方のボンネットとディーゼル機関と強制冷却装置の詰まった後方のボンネットにより操縦席からの視界が劣悪な為、当初は誘導員が胴体から伸びる足場に乗り操縦者の補助を行う規定であったが、誘導員がメインアームに接触したりメインアームの関節部に挟まれる事故が多発したことを受けこのDEシリーズ以降の型では誘導員用足場が廃止されている。

下腕部がモジュール式として設計されており、多種多様な目的に対応出来た。
この写真では伸縮型多目的アームが装備されている。このアームはシリンダーを前方に伸ばしたり、回転させる事で作業範囲が効果的に拡大できた。なお、この動作には油圧シリンダではなく電動モーターを使用する。

この寒冷地型は気候が極めて寒冷な土地に配備された仕様である。
一般型との差異は各部の凍結防止装置、旋回窓、耐雪関節、スパイク付接地板等多岐に渡る。
一般型では操縦者の操縦席へ出入り口が天板のハッチのみであったが、寒冷地では大雪時に支障が出るとされ側面に出入扉が追加された。これに伴い扉の下方に足場が追加された。

A further development on the liquid center of gravity controller-based bipedal machines developed as early as the second world war: a work enhancement vehicle fitted with arms for general work and automated to where a civilian user can operate it.

This model is the fifth in the DE series, and the last model to be fitted with a diesel engine.
The DE series along with other machines supported Japan during its post-war rapid economic growth period.
Since the DE series, vehicles mainly followed the new standard of using gasoline engines.
However, that genealogy also reached its end point with the advent of the third world war, when next generation work enhancement vehicles known as AMP Suits were developed.

Because the front fuselage containing the control system and the rear fuselage housing the diesel engine and a forced cooling system offered poor visibility from inside the cockpit, initially there would be a spotter who would climb onto the scaffolding sticking out and instruct the pilot, but since accidents would occur with the spotter being hit by the main arm or getting stuck in the joints of the arm, this spotter position was abolished from the DE series onward.

Since the lower arms were a modular design, they allowed the machine to be equipped for many different purposes.
This photo shows it with the expandable multipurpose arms installed. These arms allow the cylinder to extend forward and rotate, effectively expanding its range of useful applications. Furthermore, this motion is not achieved via hydraulic cylinders, but by electric motors.

This cold region model is specially equipped to operate in areas with extremely cold climates.
It differs from the standard model in that it has anti-freezing devices installed on many components, a clear view screen, snow-proof joints, spiked feet and many other features.
Whilst the standard model has only a flat top hatch for the pilot to enter and exit the cockpit through, in cold regions heavy snowfall becomes an obstacle so this model is installed with a side door. Footholds are also installed at the base of the door.
