To be fair, that's the way nobles used to wear the kimono, IIRC. I may be wrong, though.

Would that be for the same root reason (i.e., other people dressed them)? I believe that's also the reason why ladies' button-up shirts have the buttons on the wrong side, because traditionally women who could afford that kind of shirt had People For That.
