DUI in Japan are serious things too. You pretty much lose your license immediately if that happens.

Japan actually has two different parts to it 'driving while impaired by alcohol', which is determined solely by breathalyser, and 'driving drunk', which is entirely up to the discretion of the officer, and is, in fact, the one that carries heavier penalties.

While neither of these inherently carry revocation of licence, they do apply enough points to your license to get a suspension or outright revocation of your licence for up to 3 years. The very lowest one has enough to apply a 90-day suspension, and if you have any other points on your licence then, it's enough to bump it to revocation immediately.

On top of that, you can also get hit with up to 1,000,000 yen in fines and 5 years of imprisonment. And the kicker, all of these also apply to the passengers, for even allowing an intoxicated person to drive.

Similarly, the person(s) who provided the driver with alcohol can be hit with up to 500,000 yen and 3 years in prison for not ensuring that they did not drive from their establishment. (So you'll often see bar staff actually watching people leave to make sure that they either catch a taxi or are using a dial-a-driver (which is often cheaper than a taxi).

Any accidents/damages/injuries/death caused by driving intoxicated at separate charges, there's no 'driving while intoxicated leading to injury' in Japan, they're charged, fined, and punished as different items. (Drunk driving causing death gets put under the 'dangerous driving' umbrella (up to 20 years in prison), and you would also have the drunk driving penalties).

On top of that, even if you got the bare minimum of penalties, you'd very likely lose your job, and your insurance premiums could skyrocket.
