Well it looks like she snapped and decided to kill the injured to prevent them from suffering whatever horrors that the Abyssals may do to them.

I like how that panel set-up makes it look like he's hiding behind his rifle. A nice touch if deliberate.

I think now we see part of why he tries not to get too close to his girls...

But yeah, Hiei is a natural antidote to something like that. I'd love to have her wake me up.

I'm actually glad that we can see more of the admiral's past. I expected it to be dark, but not traumatized-because-your-comrade-killed-your-other-comrades dark.

This is the sort of stuff the Japanese pulled on the retreat from Imphal. Whole trucks of soldiers shot by their officers in the back of their heads, with the officer having shot himself afterward.

You can probably read my contempt for the IJA...

Now we know why Admiral Hisamura isn't really a morning person.

Poor guy can't even get some shut eye without the ghosts of his past haunting him all day and night.

Jesus. So his battalion's medic pulled a Mami on his team?

Yeah, something like that is...not something you recover from easily.

On a completely unrelated note, this Hiei really looks different with longer-than-normal black hair that doesn't flip too much....

It explains so much, really. No wonder he's got dead fish eyes- they're just dead eyes. No wonder he's so lackadaisical with his relationships with the girls- he probably finds it difficult to care either way and just goes with the flow as a result. No wonder has has so many hobbies- anyone would try anything to forget that experience. No wonder he's good at them- he probably threw himself wholeheartedly into them in an attempt to escape psychologically. No wonder he's not a morning person or hungry in the mornings- seeing this at night would make anyone sleep badly and wake with a poor appetite. I wonder if he's actually TOLD any of the shipgirls under his command any of this...

See this is why suspension of disbelief exists.

Hopefully this doesn't result in a strangled Haruna...

Did they forget to not draw the bullet in the falling shell casing?

No, you see, she shot his gun out of his hands, so he did the only thing he could do, and threw the bullet at her, and it went up her nose and ignited and she died. Really freak accident that saved his life, and he's been haunted by it ever since...

Admiral from Army with PTSD seems to be a thing among artists.
This is, maybe, the third one I've seen?

So... Does this qualify for "Heart-Breaking"? Because the medic's use of -kun to refer to Admiral Hisamura gives the impression that she's close to him, possibly a senior officer who spent some time teaching him the ropes.

Who are the other two, out of curiosity? I assume Kamio Reiji is one of them?

It's actually birii's admiral: I remember reading some strips about his (and Murakumo's) past somewhere but I can't place it.
Anyway, the thing about biriibase is that the shipgirls have even more interesting backgrounds: war victims(Murakumo), child guerillas(Kagerou, Shiranui, Kuroshio), resocialized criminals(Bismarck, Prinz Eugen), fighter pilot(Chiyoda), and so on.

@Kurzwaltz One assumes it's supposed to represent the casing ejecting (hence the spin) after he shot her, given the trauma angle. The bullet shouldn't still be there unless he's pulling an Old Snake reload.

Given how the 7.62 NATO casing has a rather prominent neck, I assume it's just the blurry spinning that gives it the impression that the bullet is still attached.

To be fair, Adm. Reiji's medic took a little bit of "persuasion" to go amuck.

And by "persuasion" I mean "getting eaten alive by a To-class cruiser then throttling it halfway into submission." Not to mention she ended up brainjacking that cruiser-she-turned-into-a-Re-class-Battleship with Reiji's "help".
