At first I was expecting Ghost of Pearl Harbor. Instead we get the Ghost of Nishimura...
Would conquering them finally bring the Fusous luck up.
Abyssals being the incarnation of the grudges of sunken ships, it would have made more sense to have the Fusou sisters haunting the Surigao Strait than WeeVee.
Man it would be even more ironic had WeeVee drop after blasting them.

Lost opportunity but probably in the future
The entire event feels like a stupid wasted opportunity honestly, you make an event out of the biggest naval battle of the war with the US and the drops are... useless DEs, a submarine, and an AA IJN DD. What a shit show, Leyte should have been huge event with major drops, not warmed over garbage like this.
I mean why are they even putting this stuff out? Do they actually think anyone wants more crappy no-name DEs instead of actually good Foreign DDs or hell at least the rest of the existing first rate IJN DD classes?

Now that you mention it... yeah
For a 2 part event that hyped and based on a turning point WW2 battle, the ship rewards are disappointing.
Suzuducky is the only reward I care about but she's not a good final reward than let's say Sara on 2016 Fall Medium event.

...Because this is only part one of Leyte? This is not the entire battle, there is still like a massive half to go at Winter. The Final event of Kancolle Season 1: that is where all the delicious meats and salts they are preparing for will go.
Another thing is for the newbies. So some of the really new players don't feel too depressing for not beating the event if some small/mid scale's rewards aren't all that impressive to begin with. They can focus on farming the ships they want on Easy and save resources for the truly painful events to get the strong ships they release in the future. It's not like all the players will activity buy slots and keep everyone they get anyway, so there are really no point rushing to add up the number so quickly.
That are also powercreep, balance bah bah bah... Those are hard to do, and even harder if you keep adding ships every few months. Give the devs a break.
I am in love with how Akira drew Abyssal Fusou and Yamashiro (even though hearing their lines hurts my feelings). The damaged form may be heartbreaking and all, but I'm still in love with the character design.

That makes no sense from a gameplay perspective. Why have a "first" part if beating it isn't necessary for the "second" part? You've got to have them tie in somehow to make it so that people will actually try the first part and feel rewarded for doing so. Thing is, the only way I can see them doing that is with routing...
Alright! Seems to me like four little runts need to be power-leveled harder than Kamio Reiji's boot camp!

Because if they made Leyte into a single event it would easily be at least 8 maps long, if not more. We'd basically be in event mode for a month and a half.

Seeing how Tanaka loves to pile up double or even triple phases maps lately, 16 to 20ish "maps" is more accurate.

It covers Surigo strait, the last time in history ships of the line ever fired on each other and probably the greatest single success by US destroyers of the war. This wasn't some little skirmish, this was really the largest surface action of the entire battle.
And you commentate this without a single fucking ship even remotely related to the action even though it's clearly time in the rotation for another US ship. This would have been the perfect time to introduce either a US cruiser or destroyer several note worthy examples of both where at the battle. Hell if you want a submarine so bad who about one of the pair that destroyed 75% of a cruiser division in a matter of minutes at Palawan.
Instead you commemorate this moment in history with some crap DEs, a submarine, and an AA DD not even tangentially related to the battle. It's crap, people have been talking about and hyping this event almost since the game launched and it's a complete let down.
As noted by another poster I also seriously don't see how they can have anything done in this event tie into the supposed "second stage" given that nothing you get from this event is even vaguely related to the battle. You're assuming that the devs have some sort of master plan where the second stage is going to be some huge show stopper. I'm much more convinced it's going to be just as disappointing given how out of touch they seem.

If you're worried about newbies that space it out put some smaller but still interesting ships earlier in the event so even if they don't finish it all they still get something cool. That's a FAR better solution then "make it easy and just give everyone boring uninspired rewards".

In other words "since almost all of this stuff is 'literally who' many people will scrap them anyway' making it even MORE pointless. How about instead they add some ships that people will actually want to keep hell that would encourage people to spend money on slot expansions too!
This is what blows my mind, this isn't even good business. No one wants this stuff and yet it's not any cheaper to produce this then a foreign ship people might get excited about. All this is doing is disappointing the player base for literally no discernible gain. There are plenty of well known foreign ships that even if they started dropping two per event, every event they could go for over a DECADE and not have even exhausted the big names.
That are also powercreep, balance bah bah bah... Those are hard to do, and even harder if you keep adding ships every few months. Give the devs a break.
Man give ME a break, this shit is so easy. The profit margins on this must be ungodly given the (lack of) effort this type of game needs. This isn't some triple A title, the level of effort required for balancing is virtually certain to be just changing some numbers in a spreadsheet and the effort to add a new ship ammounts to recording some voice lines you could do with a decent mic and free audio software at home and paying someone to draw a picture. KC isn't a complex game, that's one of it's flaws really, and by refusing to at least play to it's strengths by giving players meme ships they actually want to work and maybe spend some money to keep it's merely hastening it's own demise.
I'm forced to compare it to World of Warships, putting a new ship into that game has to be a zillion times more complex, but we're getting new lines and premium vessels within the same time spans KC events are occurring, and stuff like one off holiday event modes and such on occasion as well, and I wouldn't even call the WoWS dev that hard working. If you want to really shame them go compare them to the fucking Warframe devs. I don't want to hear about how damn hard it is to do stuff in your slapped together flash browser game when they've basically completely reinvented their fully 3D action title multiple times raising it to nearly AAA quality while adding scores of new features for years and maintaining a very fair freeium model to boot.
I'm of the view that the KC devs have simply gotten lazy. They got fat, dumb, and happy on there unexpectedly huge success and have just been coasting and lax ever since, they haven't pushed the game forward and they haven't really been listening to what people want. They're out of touch and hastening the demise of their product.
This latest blunder with an event people have been looking forward too for years is merely a huge and obvious example.

I hope that once Surigao and maybe Ten Go and all WW2 Jap missions is exhausted and Phase 2 starts, we can do events involving the inva... I mean liberation of US and European shores from the Abyssals.
The Summer this year and Spring 2016 is mainly a bag and grab rescue mission and not an actual bombardment/foothold.
Had hope we would do Atlantic seas when they revealed British ASW materials. Nope. Sara's Night planes, umm are doing night missions on Part 2?
I mean funnily, I was gonna theme Wolfenstein 2 for this event had it been Atlantic seas.... Oh well
The "Ghosts of Pearl Harbor" are USS California and USS West Virginia. They were sunk during the attack on Pearl Harbor and then used the power of full-scale reconstructions necromantic dark arts to pummel the crap out of the Southern Force at the Battle of the Surigao Strait.
